Rules for An Engagement SwaglerMP@aol.com Marianella April 1997This story takes place sometime after Blood Fever. Voyager gets back to the Alpha Quadrant and Tom and B’Elanna have gotten closer. Tom and Harry sat in the mess hall, as they did everyday. They were blind to the people around them since they were immersed in their favorite discussion...women. One particular to be exact. "Why don't you just ask her out Tom? What's the worse that can happen?" "She can say no...again." "Don't let that stop you." "Maybe you can talk to her. She respects you and.." "And she sees me as her little brother. What if I want to ask her out?" "I never knew you were interested in her. When did this happen?" "Relax Tom. Just wanted to see your reaction, that's all." Before Tom could answer, Ensign Bristow walked to their table. The two seated men looked up at Fred and wondered why he looked so nervous. "Is there something wrong Ensign?" Tom smiled at the young man. "No, I just wondered if either of you can help me." Fred seemed to be shuffling his feet while holding his hands behind his back. Harry just smiled and gestured for him to sit with them. "Now, how can we help you?" "It's about Lt. Torres." The eyes of Tom and Harry quickly widened and each turned to the other and then back to Fred. "What about B'Elanna?" Tom's tone was a little curious and a little jealous. "I've been wanting to ask her out for a date, but I don't know how to ask her. We all now how she broke Vorik's jaw and then beat him down in the Sakari planet." "She broke his jaw because he grabbed her. As for the planet, well, wouldn't you have beaten him if you didn't want him to forcefully mate with you." "I guess so sir, but I just don't know how to approach her." Harry was amused to see the back of Tom's neck get red. Here they were figuring out how Tom should go for B'Elanna, and now someone else is after her. "Why ask us Fred?" "Because, she spends her time either with the engines or with you two. You two, next to Commander Chakotay, know her better than anyone else." "Just go up to her and ask her out. What's the worse she can do...just don't grab her or you'll end up in the infirmary." Tom let out a quick laugh. He didn't want to help Fred out with B'Elanna but he didn't want anyone else to know his own interests. He had to figure out a way to get to her on his own. "Thank you Ensign Kim, Mr. Paris. I'll try to do as you've said." Ensign Bristow got up and walked out of the mess hall. Harry let out a grin and patted Tom on the shoulders. "Hey Tom. You've got some competition now." "Yeah right. You really think she'd prefer Fred over to me? She'll scare him out of his skin." "We'll see Tom. This is going to be interesting." B'Elanna walked through the corridors not paying attention to the bypassers around her. She had the warp engines on her mind. She wanted to get them back to at least 99% efficient. So what if she didn't have a social life. She didn't think she needed one when there was too much work to do. Besides, who would really be interested in pursuing a meaningful relationship with her...especially after the Pon Farr incident. Word had spread fast when Tom contacted Voyager about her biting him. As she approached her quarters, she noticed Ensign Bristow pacing in front of her door. He wasn't one of her crew, so she was curious to why he was here. "Is there something wrong Fred?" "Yes, oh, I mean no." "Then why are you in front of my quarters?" "Well I was wondering if you were, um, if you were free for lunch tomorrow? I'm a little homesick for Cajun cooking, and I thought you'd like to accompany me to this great restaurant I programmed." "What kind of program?" B'Elanna wasn't interested in any ulterior motives most men had. "A program that takes place in New Orleans. Commander Sisko, from DS9, has a father who owns a restaurant there and makes the best Creole around." "Well, I guess so." "Excuse me?" "Fred, I said yes." "Oh, great. I'll meet you at holodeck one at 1300 hours then!" "Okay, see you tomorrow." Fred walked away happily as B'Elanna shook her head and entered her quarters. She recalled how Tom teased her about Bristow having a crush on her. Guess he was correct. When the computer turned the lights on, she noticed a vase with a lovely white rose sitting on her desk. There was a note attached to the vase and read it aloud: "B'Elanna, Will you do me the honor of having dinner with me tomorrow night at a great restaurant in Italy? No games, no pressure, just the enjoyment of your company. I'll wait for you in holodeck two at 2000 hours. Tom" B'Elanna put the note down and smelled the rose. It had a wonderful, intoxicating scent. She then realized she had two dates tomorrow! Should she cancel one or both? The thought of being courted by two men overwhelmed her...even amused her. The next morning, B'Elanna sat alone in the mess hall reading a PADD. Fred and Tom arrived at the same time seeing her all alone. Each one wanted to use this opportunity to sit by her. Each man quickly grabbed breakfast and headed for her table. As they approached her table, each man realized the other was headed the same way. They paused for a moment until B'Elanna looked up. She blushed slightly and greeted them both. "Good morning Tom. Good morning Fred." "Hi B'Elanna. What are you reading?" "Just some stuff for Engineering. I'll see you two later." She got up quickly and left the room, leaving the two men staring at each other. After a few seconds Tom laughed and sat down. Fred, on the other hand, sighed and looked for another table. Harry was at the other end of the room witnessing the whole episode. "Hey Tom. What's going on? Looks like you and Fred scared B'Elanna away." "Knock it off Harry. She had to go to Engineering. Anyway, she and I have a date tonight." "Seriously? When did you ask her out? You know Fred was going to ask her out too." "Well, I had to make my move before he did. Besides, after our dinner tonight, she wouldn't think of going out with anyone else." "I think you're rushing it a bit. Good luck anyway Pal. I'll be up late tonight if you need me. Susan and I are practicing for next week's recital." B'Elanna was distracted at Engineering. Luckily, nothing major was going on that needed her undivided attention. Just an ordinary day...until this afternoon and evening. After being on Voyager for almost three years, now someone has decided to take an interest in her. Well, other than Vorik, who had some chemical imbalance. The thought of him wanting to bond with her made her shudder. But who would she want to bond with? Chakotay...no. He was just an infatuation. Harry... he's was one the sweetest men she had ever known, but couldn't imagine being more than friends. Fred...now here was an interesting situation. He's just some young ensign who had a crush on her and she didn't return the feeling. Tom...what about Tom? He was arrogant, unpredictable, intelligent, stubborn and incredibly handsome. B'Elanna shook her head to get the image of Tom out of her mind. Would the two of them even be good together? She was too afraid to ponder any longer. Time passed quickly as she left for the holodeck. She didn't bother to change since she had to get to Engineering in ninety minutes. At the front of the holodeck doors, she paused and prepared herself for anything. The doors opened and she saw cobblestone streets with various shops. She heard some kind of jazz music being played. Looking further down, she spotted the restaurant and walked inside. A very friendly, elderly man greeted her and sat her down. This must Commander Sisko's father. I wonder if my father would be this friendly towards me. She looked around for Fred when she noticed a box on the other chair with her name on it. She opened the box and found a statue of a ceramic cat playing with a ball of yarn. It was cute, but a little juvenile. "Hi B'Elanna." "Hello Fred. You look nice. I'm sorry I didn't change; I need to be back on duty after lunch." Fred was dressed in casual clothes and slicked his hair back. She could smell he was wearing some kind of cologne. "It's okay. " He sat down, almost tripping over one of the legs of the chair. B'Elanna held her laugh inside. She saw how nervous he was...almost like a schoolboy. She couldn't see being romantically involved with him. She was very courteous during lunch, but never said anything to lead him on. After their meal, she was ready to head back to work. Before she could get up, Fred went to get her chair. "Thank you for joining me B'Elanna." "You're welcome Fred. Lunch was great, but I better get back before Lt. Hogan reroutes the power couplings the wrong way." "No problem. Is there any chance you'd be free for dinner?" B'Elanna hesitated a quick no, but she didn't want to crush him right away. "I'm sorry, but I do have plans." "Maybe some other time?" "Maybe. Good bye." B'Elanna got up and walked out. She should have said no, but it was nice having some attention from the opposite sex. It was innocent...maybe a date every once in awhile and she wasn't committed to anyone. Tom was in a very good mood at the helm. Every response was given with a smile. Only two more hours before dinner with B'Elanna. Finally she accepted a dinner invitation! The rest of the bridge crew looked at him with confusion. He was a friendly officer, but what put him in such a good mood? His replacement took over and off her ran to his quarters. The holodeck program was already set, but he needed to get a few more things ready. He picked out a formal jacket and pants, a silk shirt and a tie. He picked up the roses he asked Kes to bring from her 'garden' and a wrapped box with a bright red bow. After one more quick look on the mirror, he headed out. B'Elanna was in her quarters getting ready for her next 'date'. She was amused for herself that tow men asked her out on the same day. With Fred, it was only a lunch with a colleague. Now what about Tom? she asked herself out loud. Any romantic thoughts she had disappeared quickly. She looked in her closet for a casual dress but decided to go with a more formal looking outfit. Since the restaurant was programmed for Italy and it was dinner, well why not dress for it. After another glance in the mirror, she headed out her door. As she walked through the corridors, some officers stopped and complimented her on her appearance. This made her blush a little. She never was the one to get all fixed up and the attention was all new to her. Before she got to the holodeck, she saw Harry exiting the other holodeck. He took a second glance her way and smiled. She saw him walk over to her to she pretended to straighten out a wrinkle in her dress. "Hi B'Elanna. You look wonderful." "Thanks Harry. I feel a bit silly but Tom did invite to dinner." "Once he sees you, he'll be speechless for the first time in his life." B'Elanna just smiled and looked down. "Well, how did lunch go with Fred?" "How did you know about that?" "He told Tom and I that he wanted to ask you out. Also, Fred told about half the ship you agreed to a lunch date." "It wasn't a 'date', just lunch. Does Tom know I had lunch with Fred?" "I don't think so. He's been on the bridge all day and headed straight for his quarters afterwards. I think he's excited about this evening. Well, I don't want to make you late. Good night B'Elanna." "Bye Harry." She paused in front of the door, took a deep breath, and headed inside. The doors brought her inside a very elegant restaurant where she was immediately greeted by a Maitre de, who spoke broken Standard. He was dressed in a black tuxedo with a red carnation boutonniere. He sat her down at a very cozy table by a roaring fireplace. Tom wasn't to be seen yet so she sat patiently. A violinist came over to her table and began to play a sweet song...Vivaldi maybe she thought. Another man came over, handed her a rose and began to sing. She took it and smiled. Where is that Tom! As the man continued to sing in Italian, of course, a gift wrapped box was placed on her lap. She turned to see Tom dressed in the same formal attire, wearing a beautiful smile. When the two musicians left, Tom sat down besides B'Elanna. "You look absolutely beautiful...well, you usually do." "Yeah right. I don't think Starfleet attire can make anyone look beautiful. You look nice Tom. Did you know about my lunch with Fred?" Tom looked surprised. He didn't think Fred would move that quickly. "Um, no. I did know he wanted to ask you out. You should have seen him this morning! He was so nervous about approaching you and..." "Let's not talk about Fred. He's just a young ensign I had lunch with. What's in the box Tom?" "Open it and you'll see. Would you like a glass of wine?" "I'd love too, as long as it isn't blood wine." She smiled as she opened the box. She carefully untied the ribbon and opened the box. She looked inside and couldn't believe her eyes. Inside there was a beautiful gold bracelet with two hearts and two diamonds. The hearts were connected with two small gold bands. "Tom, it's beautiful...you shouldn't have. What kind of bracelet is this?" "It's called an ankle bracelet. Back in the twentieth century, young men used to give their steady girlfriends an ankle bracelet engraved with their initials and their first date. Women usually attached it to a necklace to display to all that she was going steady. I know, it's kind of what teenagers did, but I thought it would look nice on you once in awhile." "It was very thoughtful of you Tom, but we're not going steady." "Well, just think of it as just a gift." B'Elanna smiled and began to put the bracelet on her ankle. Tom watched her as she crossed her right leg over. Her knee was exposed which caught his attention. She noticed his eyes but didn't bother to cover her knee up since she wanted to wear the bracelet. "There we go. Now, I can wear it under my uniform without anyone knowing." Tom was touched by this gesture but he couldn't say how much. He wanted her but was willing to take it slow. He wanted to woo her and win her whole heart and soul, then body. "Are you ready to order B'Elanna?" She nodded her head so Tom gestured to the waiter. Their dinners came so the conversation slowed. Tom kept an eye on her with every bite he took. She is so beautiful he thought to himself. She felt a little unsure why he kept looking at her so she surprised him by winking at him. "What are you thinking about Tom?" "Tom straightened himself up and blushed, "Well, about you." "What about me?" "I better not...I kind a like my jaw the way it is." "Excuse me Paris!" "If I compliment you, then you'll think I was up to something." "Try me." "Well, I think you are so beautiful, but I don't want you to know how I feel about you." "Why not?" "Would you like to order dessert?" "Don't change the subject Tom." "You'll love the cannolis or even the cheesecake." "Tom!" "Not yet B'Elanna. I'm glad we are good friends, I don't want to jeopardize anything." "Well, you better answer me the next to I ask. I'll try a cannoli." The two drank coffee and enjoyed their desserts. Afterwards, they walked through the beautiful streets of Florence. Tom desperately wanted to hold her hand, but didn't want to be rejected. They seemed to be having a great time. They stopped in front of water fountain lit by the moonlight. "Here B'Elanna." He handed her a gold coin. "What's this for?" "You throw it into the water fountain and you make a wish. You go first...just remember not to tell anyone your wish or it won't come true." She looked at him strangely but complied. She held the coin in her fist, shut her eyes, and threw the coin in. "Your turn Tom." Tom did the same and then smiled. "Ready to go B'Elanna. I had a wonderful night. Is it okay if I walk you to your quarters?" "I had a nice time too, and yes, I'd like it if you walk me to my quarters." "Let's go." Tom held out his elbow to her, which she quickly grabbed. The arch appeared as they made their exits. People who passed them by made a mental note as they the two arm in arm. Rumors would start flying high by morning. The two arrived in front of her quarters. "Well, here we are my Lady." "Yes, here we are." They paused a moment as they stared at each others eyes. "I had a wonder night Tom. Thanks again for the bracelet." "No problem...well, good night." Before he could take a step away from her she touched his face and kissed him lightly on his chin. She then caressed his cheek before entering her quarters. As her doors closed, Tom was left standing there still in disbelief over what just happened. Does that mean she likes me and doesn't mind me pursuing her? He walked towards his quarters as if he was walking in zero gravity. He entered his quarters and noticed a few messages left on his PADD. Two were from Harry and one was from B'Elanna! He quickly opened her message and read it aloud: Tom, I had a wonderful evening. I would be delighted if you could join me for a river ride on the holodeck tomorrow evening. Wear something that you don't mind getting wet and I'll pack us a picnic. B'Elanna He was delighted that he didn't hear the first two chirps at his door. He answered the door and Harry walked in. "Hey Tom. How was your evening?" "Wonderful. She and I have plans tomorrow night!" "What kind of plans?" "Some river ride. Why?" "Good luck if it's white water rafting...could be dangerous. I heard Chakotay refused to go again after one ride." "I'll take my chances just to be with her. Hey, did you know she had a lunch date with Fred?" "The whole ship knows. Also, the whole ship knows she had a dinner date with you and I think Fred's going to say something to you in the morning." "How do you know?" "Megan Delaney called Susan while we were practicing. Megan and Jenny were in Sandrine's and heard Fred was pretty upset about the two of you. He went on about how you gave him advice to ask her out, and then you turn around and ask her out yourself." "Great, one more thing for this ship to dislike me for." "Hey Tom, real friends don't listen to the stuff said about you." "Like who?" "Me. B'Elanna, Kes and Neelix and some others...mostly women." "Oh well. Let's see what tomorrow brings. I'm gonna turn in Harry and have a pleasant dream about B'Elanna. Good night Harry." "Good night Tom. Tom and Harry walked into the mess hall, where they were met with unfriendly eyes. Each person who looked at Tom seemed to shrug and turn his head away in anger. Harry had warned Tom about how angry Fred was, but he didn't expect such hostilities from the crew. "I wonder what Fred told them about you," Harry whispered. "Well, whatever it was, it was an exaggeration of the truth and I'm not going to let it bother me." "Okay Tom, but just in case, I'll watch your back." The two wandered in a little further and saw Vorik and Fred sitting together. Tom just ignored them as he went to get his breakfast. The Ensigns quickly ended their conversation and headed towards Tom's table. Before they could say anything, Harry stood up. "We are not interested in anything you two have to say. Whatever rumors you're spreading about Tom, take them somewhere else." "We're here to speak to Tom, not you Harry." "Then you can address him as lieutenant or sir." "Excuse me Lt. Paris, but it seems Fred and I have something in common. We both have you to thank for our botched up relationships with B'Elanna." Tom had to laugh at this. He looked at them both and spoke firmly. "Sure, the two of you can have a pity party together. Vorick, we all know B'Elanna rejected you before I was brought into the situation. Now Fred, you had one lunch date with B'Elanna. What makes you think it would go any further even if I wasn't in the picture?" Tom's last comment angered Fred greatly. Vorik was a bit embarrassed, but showed no emotion since he wanted to remain in a Vulcan composure. Fred made a fist with each hand and stepped a little closer to Tom. "You knew I was going to ask her out. Why did you turn around and ask her out yourself!" "I don't need your permission for anything I do personally Ensign Bristow. B'Elanna and I have been good friends so why shouldn't I ask her out." "You're not good enough for her you traitor!" Before anything could go any further, Chakotay and B'Elanna broke it up. No one noticed them walk in, but they did hear the conversation. "At ease Ensign Bristow. I suggest you and Ensign Vorick leave the mess hall and report for duty. Paris, Harry, please finish your breakfast and then do the same." "Yes sir." the four said in unison. The crowd dissipated so B'Elanna sat with Tom and Harry while Chakotay grabbed a cup of coffee and left. Neither men spoke of what just happened. "Tom, I heard what Fred said. You're not a traitor and I don't believe any of the rumors he started." "How many rumors are there now?" Harry asked. "Forget it Harry, I don't think Tom would like to hear any of them. By the way Tom, are we still on for tonight?" "Nothing could keep me away." Tom showed his always irresistible smile while Harry laughed inside. "Am I in for a treat or torture? I heard about wild river rafting." "Well, if you're not careful, then you'll get hurt. You're always up for an adventure so I'm sure you'll find it exciting." "Now I'm looking forward to it even more." He was looking forward to being with B'Elanna, not being pushed around by wild waters. "Well, see you tonight. Harry, if you're free later this afternoon, could you come to Engineering? I need a little help in one of the computers again." "Sure B'Elanna. I'll be there about 1300 hours okay. I'll bring you a sandwich so we can eat while we work." "Good bye B'Elanna. Be careful or someone might start a rumor about you and Harry this time." The three left the mess hall in separate directions. Every person who passed Tom seemed to look the other way. By the time he arrived on the bridge, Janeway already had orders for him to meet her in the ready room. "So Mr. Paris, what's this I hear about you and Ensign Bristow?" "I'm not sure what you heard, but I'll tell you my side of the situation." After he discussed the situation with her, the conclusion made him inculpable. He was not responsible for B'Elanna's acceptance of both invitations, nor was he responsible for any types of feeling she had for him. It just showed one officer getting jealous of another. "You are aware that this new situation will put a larger gap between you and some of the crew." "Yes Captain, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm just here to do my job and my personal life is my business. I'm not here to make anyone's life miserable, especially my own." "Fine Tom. You're dismissed and good luck on your trip with Ms. Torres. Chakotay was in sickbay after he went river rafting with her." Tom just smiled as he left the room. He's been given worst attitudes before the ship so now it didn't seem to bother him. He did have good friends on board for him. He didn't take their friendships lightly either. He told them the truth about his past, well the past couldn't change, but he certainly did everything he could to make the present better. In Engineering, B'Elanna could feel the eyes stare at her. At first she didn't let this bother her, but after awhile, the whispers were getting on her nerves. When the crew least expected it, she gave a loud holler, "Okay people, out with it! Anyone have anything to say about myself, Ensign Bristow, or Lt. Paris, do it now!" Everyone was taken by surprise. No one knew what to say first until Lt. Carey spoke up. "We heard that Ensign Bristow had invited you to lunch and Lt. Paris invited you to dinner yesterday." "That, so far is true. Go on." "Well, Fred told us that Paris knew he wanted to ask you out, but he went ahead and asked you at as well just to make him look foolish." "Tom doesn't have to make anyone look foolish. My personal life is none of your business, but to stop any rumors, Tom didn't know Fred was going to ask me out that day. I know Fred approached him in the mess hall this morning, since I heard every single word. Tom and I are good friends so why does it matter to anyone if I have dinner with him. Oh, to add to your gossip, Tom and I will be wild water rafting this evening. If you see me with Ensign Kim, he's a good friend too and we are not romantically involved. Now everyone back to work!" Just as she finished her shouting, Harry walked into engineering. At the sight of him, B'Elanna started laughing uncontrollably which puzzled him. "What's so funny B'Elanna? Did I miss something said about me?" "Well, not exactly. Just forget and come over here, I need your help." "Anything you say Chief. Here, have a sandwich. I took the liberty of removing the leola root out for you. As far as the rest of it, well, your guess is as good as mine." "Thanks Harry. Now, this computer console seems to malfunctioning a bit. I looked under the conduits to see if the problem was there, and I also tried running a diagnostic. I think it might have something to do with it's specific programming." "Okay, let's take a look." As Harry began to work, a few crew members seemed to have moved closer to their work station. He thought they were trying to eavesdrop so he had a little fun with them. "Hey B'Elanna, what would do to Fred if he approached you like Vorick did." B'Elanna didn't know he was joking so she bluntly answered him. "With Vorick, I busted he jaw. Vulcans are strong. If it was Fred, he'd have a few broken ribs by me throwing him against the wall." Harry began laughing as two ensigns quickly left their supposed work stations. "Great B'Elanna, now engineering will have a few more things to talk about." "I don't care. They wouldn't believe the truth if it came up to them and bit them. Did you figure out the problem yet?" "Not yet, but I will." B'Elanna left engineering tired and frustrated, but she didn't want it to get in the way of her evening plans. I should have programmed some Klingon calisthenics so I can punch somebody she thought as she got to her quarters. The idea of Tom fighting side by side with her with a bat'telh was sort of amusing. As she entered her quarters, she found a small bouquet of daisies and a medkit on her bed. The note attached was handwritten: B'Elanna, If anything happens to me, here's a medkit. If the situation is more severe, I'd love daisies on my grave. Tom Very funny Tom. She packed the flowers and the medkit along with her things and left for the holodeck. On her way to the holodeck, she was greeted by Chakotay. "Good evening Chakotay. What are you up to?" "I'm going to recreate a ceremony of my ancestors. It's very personal so I can't discuss it. You headed to torture Tom with your program?" "Hey it's not my fault you got hurt." "You didn't tell me that it was necessary to tie myself in when we went through the washer. If I had done that, then I would have stayed on the raft, and not beamed into Sickbay." "You said you've done rafting before." "Yes, but never in your homeworld where even the waters have mad spirits." He laughed and headed away. "Have a nice evening with Paris and please be careful...and I'm not just talking about rafting." "Sure Chakotay. Good bye." B'Elanna entered the holodeck after programming the proper scene. The sounds of the powerful waves put her mind at ease. She walked over to the raft they were going to use and began getting things ready. So what if others thought this program seemed dangerous, Tom's downhill skiing is even more dangerous. She continued about her preparations when she heard the doors opened. In walked Tom wearing a thick type of scuba gear, except they were cut to mid thigh. It fit like second skin and he sure looked good to B'Elanna. It took her a few seconds to even speak to him. "That's a nice outfit Tom. Where do you think you're going?" "Thanks, but I read somewhere that this was the proper outfit to wear. I can stay dry inside while the outside can get wet. Great setting, where are we?" "On the Klingon homeworld. I hope you're up for a wild ride. Here, better take these." She handed him a life jacket and a helmet. He quickly put them on and hopped into the raft. B'Elanna pushed the raft away from the shore with one of the oars and off they went. The ride started off a little bumpy as each wave crashed on the rocks and on their raft. They both seemed to be enjoying themselves. Then, the drops came and the river got rougher. With each crashing wave, B'Elanna and Tom became more tired. She began tying herself in and called for Tom to do the same. "Why do we have to strap ourselves in?" Tom shouted. "Because that's why!" B'Elanna pointed to the three rivers converging into one. "That's called a washer so you better hold on tight! We've got to stay away from the center as far as possible. We don't want to get caught in it!" Tom complied and prepared himself for this part of the ride. He really enjoyed being with B'Elanna, but he would have rather been somewhere less dangerous. Oh well, I live for adventure, he thought. Tom spoke to soon as three powerful waves crashed into them from different sides. The raft overturned dragging the two passengers towards the washer. "B'Elanna, hang on!" "If we get trapped I'll end the program quickly. Try moving the raft towards those branches so we can grab onto them." "Shouldn't we untie ourselves?" "As soon as we get to the branches, but I don't have a knife on me!" "Here we go B'Elanna!" The moved towards the branches sticking out. Tom got there first and held on with one hand while untying himself with the other. As B'Elanna reached for the branch, another wave pushed her and the raft away. Tom tried to grab the raft but wasn't quick enough. He saw she was directly headed for the washer. He had to do something so B'Elanna wouldn't get hurt but he didn't want to insult her. When her head was no longer visible he ended the program. The yellow grid lines on the black walls appeared as Tom rubbed his eyes opened. He saw B'Elanna lying on the ground unconscious. "Computer, emergency transport to sickbay!" The two materialized as the Doctor was singing another new Opera. He saw Tom carrying B'Elanna and directed him to place her on the biobed. "Now what have the two of you been doing? It is so incomprehensible that you humanoids torture your bodies for some form of adventure. Oh, I see. She has a slight concussion and just swallowed a little too much water. Here, this should take care of her." The Doctor injected her and she spit out the water right into the Doctor's face. "Nice to see you too lieutenant. Well, you'll make a complete recovery thanks to my medical expertise and Lt. Paris' quick beam into here." She looked over to see Tom smiling at her. I wonder what he's thinking she thought. "When can I leave Doctor?" "After I recheck your neural pathways and inform Captain Janeway of your situation. You should be out of here in about an hour, maybe quicker if Mr. Paris leaves." "I'm not in the way Doc!" "You are a distraction so please leave." "All right, but I'll be back to pick her up." Tom returned to sickbay in exactly an hour. He saw B'Elanna sitting up on the biobed looking rather happy to see him. She pulled him close and whispered in his ear. "I'm so glad you're hear. The Doctor has been trying out some Klingon operas and it's rather annoying. Let's get out of here!" "You may take Ms. Torres away, but next time put the safeties back in your programs." "Sure Doctor. Let's go B'Elanna...you still owe me dinner." "Okay Tom...I'm starving. Where do you want to go?" Tom paused for a moment wanting to say her place, but he didn't want to give her the wrong idea. It was the right idea for him, but he did want to take things slow. "I guess anywhere but the mess hall." "Okay Tom, I saved a few replicator rations so let's eat in my quarters. I need to get out of these clothes." The two left Sickbay and proceeded to B'Elanna's quarters. Those who passed them by whispered among themselves. The two ignored them and just kept walking. They met Harry in the corridors. "Hi Tom, hi B'Elanna. I heard about your accident. How are you feeling?" "Hi Harry. I'm fine...I just have a slight headache. What are you up to at this hour?" "I'm headed for Kes' quarters. She was interested in learning how to read music and maybe take up an instrument." "Really Pal. Who's idea was it to go to her quarters?" "Knock it off Tom. Have a nice evening Harry, good bye." "Bye you two." Harry departed the couple smiling. He was glad his two friends were 'dating'. Tom and B'Elanna arrived at their destination. As they walked in, B'Elanna saw a message left for her from Fred. Tom noticed it and held his comment to himself. B'Elanna excused herself to the bathroom and brought the data padd with her. The note read: "Dear B'Elanna, I know you are on another date with Paris. I'm sorry for what I said to him in the mess hall and I'm even more sorry that you had to witness it. I really liked you and I hope we can still be friends even though you are now involved with him. Sincerely, Fred" She put the padd down and began to undress. Did everyone think she and Tom were a couple? She thought about Tom and herself together and smiled. Well, maybe it would be nice. But what if it turns out like the other human relationships I had. He's different from the others though. She quickly changed to a pair of comfortable shorts and a sweatshirt. She walked out seeing Tom reading his PADD. "What are you reading Tom?" "Don Quixote by Cervantes. It's the funniest classical literature I've ever read. It also comes in a play version, but the novel is so much better." "What's it about?" "It's about a dillusional, late middle-aged man who thinks he's a Knight. The author pokes fun of everything...religion, politics, aristocrats, peasants. You should read it sometimes." "Maybe. What should we have for dinner?" "Something easy...I don't want to waste too many of your replicator rations." "Okay, how about two cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes." "Sounds great." B'Elanna ordered their meals and set them on the table. Tom removed his boots and sat at the table. She just smiled and handed him a napkin. "Why did you take off your boots?" "You don't have any shoes on either. I just wanted to be comfortable." "Fine Tom. How's your dinner?" "Delicious. I haven't eaten these since ..." "Since earth? Me neither. I remember the first time I ate one. My Dad took me out to a shop one day. I must have drunk three chocolate milkshakes. My Mom was furious at him for making my stomachs so sick. I had fun anyway." "My last time eating a cheeseburger was on a date with someone I don't care to remember since she dumped me after the accident." "Let's change the subject then. Can I ask you something Tom?" "Do you really think I looked beautiful last night?" "You look beautiful in anything...even if a gel pack exploded on you." "Yeah right." "No I'm serious." He moved his hand towards hers and held it. "Remember the first time we met? You and Harry were in the Ocampan tunnels all covered in dirt and my immediate thought of you was that you were very beautiful." "Even with my Klingon ridges?" "You are beautiful just the way you are. I'm sorry that you grew up with so much prejudice in your life from humans and Klingons. I would have definitely asked you out if we were at the Academy together." B'Elanna just blushed and patted his hand. "Well, now that were done, you clean up." "Okay. I had a real nice evening with you, even though it was interrupted by a trip to Sickbay." "Me too Tom. Where is our relationship going? I'd like to know if we're now dating or are we just two friends who go to the holodeck once in awhile." Tom walked over to her and took her hands in his. "B'Elanna, it would be my pleasure to be the man you are exclusively dating. But if you just want to remain friends, I can accept that as well. I think you know that I'm very interested in you and that I haven't dated anyone on board for more than a year and a half." Their eyes met and she can see the seriousness in those sparkling blue eyes. She placed one hand on his face and caressed it. He tilted his head to kiss her fingers as he shut his eyes. They smiled at each other and suddenly their lips met. The kiss was first sweet and then became more passionate. He placed his arms around her waist and she placed her arms around his shoulders. After a breathless minute, Tom whispered to her gently, "Good night B'Elanna. I should be leaving or I won't be able to let you go in another minute." She didn't want him to let her go. It felt great to be in his arms, but he was right. She wanted this relationship, but she didn't want it to move too quickly. "Okay Tom. Let's do something tomorrow night." "Definitely my Bella. I'll see you in the mess hall for breakfast." "Good bye Tom." She opened her door but before he could take two steps down the corridor, she grabbed his hand and kissed him another time. "Now you can go Tom." He kissed the front of her right hand and walked happily to his quarters. As soon as he entered his room, he sent B'Elanna a message. It was a song from the musical play "Man a La Mancha", the play version of the novel he was reading. He changed the woman's name from Dulcinea to My B'Elanna. "I have dreamed thee too long. Never seen thee but known thee with all of my heart. Half a prayer half a song. You have always been with me though We have always been apart... My B'Elanna. My B'Elanna I see heaven when I see thee My B'Elanna. And thy name is like a prayer an angel whispers My B'Elanna, My B'Elanna. If I reach out to thee Do not tremble or shrink From the touch of my hand on thy hair Let my fingers but see Thou art warm and alive and no phantom to fade in the air... My B'Elanna, My B'Elanna I have sought thee, sung thee dreamed thee My B'Elanna, My B'Elanna" After sending her the message, he quickly went to bed. B'Elanna enjoyed the message from Tom. It made her body tingle imagining him singing the song to her. Maybe she found the man she wanted to be with for the rest of her life. She was looking forward to their breakfast meeting. B'Elanna practically ran into the mess hall, almost knocking Harry down. "Oh, I'm sorry Harry. I guess I wasn't looking where I was going." "No problem B'Elanna. Why are you running into the mess hall? Are you that excited to eat one of Neelix's creations." She just let out a laugh and patted his arm. "No, I'm meeting Tom for breakfast. How was your evening with Kes?" "Very nice. I'm actually meeting her for breakfast. Oh there she is. See you two later." B'Elanna watched as she saw Kes' eyes smile as Harry sat down next to her. They don't make a bad couple. They look kinda cute she thought. During her minute of distraction, Tom walked behind her and kissed her cheek. She quickly turned to greet him. "Where have you been?" "I'm not late. What did you do run here?" "Nevermind, let's eat." She took him by the hand as they walked inside. Those dining took note of their closeness. Before the bystanders could start whispering B'Elanna boldly shouted, "May I have everyone's attention. Before you can start gossiping about Lt. Paris and myself, we are currently dating just each other." "So no man dare ask my B'Elanna out." Tom joined her and put his arm around her shoulder. Everyone was speechless, so they just continued eating their breakfast. The couple sat and ate while staring into one another's eyes. Word got to the bridge before Tom got there. Commander Chakotay waited for Tom at his station. Tom noticed him standing there so he inquired. "Is there a problem Commander?" "No lieutenant. We just heard something from the mess hall. I'm concerned for B'Elanna." "If I could speak freely Commander. I understand your concern for her, but she's an adult and it's really none of your business. For your information though, my intentions with her are honorable." "That's good to here. You know she's like a daughter to me so I just want her to get hurt anymore. I won't bring this subject up, unless I have to." "Yes sir." Chakotay left Tom's side and took his own seat. He wasn't sure if he should be glad at Chakotay's protectiveness or mad for not seeing him as a trustworthy person. In either case, Tom was happy with B'Elanna being his girl. That evening, the two met at a deserted Sandrine's. Tom had posted a notice to other crew members to stay out for the night due to a private dinner. There was just the holocharacters working the room and a piano player to be seen. Tom walked from the bar to his table for about ten minutes waiting for B'Elanna. Then she walked in looking stunning as ever. She was dressed in a very elegant white silk gown with long matching gloves. Around her neck was the ankle bracelet he had given to her attached to a golden necklace. As she walked towards him, he noticed their initials engraved in the small hearts. He held out his hands to hers and escorted her to their table. "B'Elanna, you look so beautiful and you got our initials on the bracelet. I don't know what to say." "Hey, you're the one who told me what humans did in the late twentieth century. I think it looks rather nice on me." "It sure does. May I have this dance and the song is your choice." "Please have him play the piece you sent me last night using the original name. I'd love to hear it with music." Tom did as she requested and the two held one another close as they danced. Her head laid upon his beating chest, while his on the top of her head. He drank in the scent of her hair. They were so comfortable in this state that they didn't even notice the song had ended. The holocharacter just started playing it over. "Tom...Tom." "Yes B'Elanna." "I think we heard the song played for at least ten times. We better sit down before your holocharacter leaves." "Okay, ready for dinner?" "Sure. What are we having?" "Actually, an old earth favorite...fried chicken, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes with gravy and an apple pie!" "Sounds wonderful and absolutely fattening." "Come on B'Elanna. I've heard the Captain comment on how much you eat and how petite you keep yourself. You'll love it." "Okay Mr. Paris, let's eat." The two ate their dinners with light conversation. Their eyes kept focused on one another's. When it came time for them to leave, Captain Janeway called them for an emergency meeting in the briefing room. Chakotay, Tuvok, and Harry were already in the briefing room when Tom and B'Elanna entered. They all had different reactions to the couples' appearance. Tuvok, as always remained emotionless, but did raise his eyebrows. Harry, of course, smiled as his two friends sat by one another. Then Chakotay, who could not or would not put any expression on his face. B'Elanna just looked at him and shook her head. He, in turn, crossed his arms. "I'm sorry to call everyone here at this hour but we have some rather startling news to tell everyone. Go ahead Mr. Kim." "Yes Captain. Computer, display image in coordinate 343 mark 61 and magnify one hundred times." As the image appeared, a quiet sound of ahhhs were heard. "Yes everyone, you guessed it. It's a wormhole. We are still too far to send a probe through it, but we'll be able to do that in about thirteen hours." "I better get to Engineering and start getting tests ready for the wormhole. We don't want to fly through something that might be unstable." "Wait a minute B'Elanna. You can do that when your shift starts in seven hours. Right now I want you and the rest of the staff to be prepared...we might be going home. Dismissed." The senior staff left the briefing room in enlightened spirits with thoughts of going home. It was a mixed reaction from Tom, though. B'Elanna met him with a puzzled look. "Tom, what's wrong? Aren't you happy about finding the wormhole?" "Of course I am. I just don't know where we'll be once we get there. Will I have a career, or do I spend a few more years in New Zealand? Also, if I am free, what about you?" "I'm sure the Captain will do everything she can for us. She's been doing that from the beginning. As for me, my future is your future." With those words, Tom smiled. He took her by her hand and walked her to her quarters. Any looks they received from the ones passing them by were ignored. As they turned the corner, Kes greeted them. "Good evening Tom and B'Elanna." "Hi Kes. What are doing up and around this side of the corridor?" "Oh, I was hoping to talk to you B'Elanna about something personal." Tom smiled and squeezed B'Elanna's hand. "Then I'll say my good nights to you both." He kissed B'Elanna's forehead before he left. "See you in the morning." The two ladies watched him leave as they entered B'Elanna's quarters. B'Elanna invited her to sit down. "So, what can I do for you Kes?" "Before we get to my question, I would like to say that I am happy for you both. Tom's eyes seem to glisten whenever he sees you." "He did like you first." "No, only as a friend who he knew I was unavailable. Remember when we all first started to work together. Many Starfleet and Maquis members shut Tom out. I was neither, so we became friends. Anyway, I need your help with a personal concern. It's about Harry." "What about Harry?" "You know Neelix and I have broken up for sometime now and I sort of have some feeling for Harry. He's so sweet to be around, but he still loyal to Libby. I heard about the wormhole and I would like to go along with Voyager. I just don't know where I would go afterwards." "You would be the only Ocampa out there, but it'll be filled with more worlds for you to discover. I'm sure the Captain will be happy to help you out in any way. As for Harry and Libby, I don't know both their situations. She may still be waiting for him, or she may have moved on with her life. We have been gone for three years." "I guess you're right. Harry hasn't mentioned her name since that rift he passed through last year. Time will tell where this relationship will, I suppose." "For everything Kes. In the Alpha Quadrant, you can meet with more Vulcans or even Betazoids to help you with your telepathic abilities." "That would be exciting. Well, here's hoping. Good night B'Elanna, and thank you." "Good night Kes." In Engineering, B'Elanna and her crew were frantically working. There was only two more hours until they reached the coordinates. Everything had to be ready...tests for the wormhole and Voyager's systems itself to proceed through it. Nothing distracted her from getting as much as possible done. On the bridge, there was a little tension and some anxiousness. They were closing in on the wormhole. "Mr. Paris, operate on impulse only and try to get us to a safe distance of the wormhole." "Yes Captain." "Captain, my analysis of the wormhole from here is quite stable. There are no fluctuations of any gaseous matter." "Thank you Mr. Tuvok. Bridge to Engineering, we're in front of the wormhole." "Torres here. Harry is ready to launch the probe." "Then do so and keep us informed. Bridge out." "Let's do it Harry." "Initiating probe launch. There it goes, ten seconds until it will enter the wormhole. It's in and now we wait." "We're picking up ion particles, various gases and look. Look at the coordinates it passed!" "That's incredible. Engineering to Bridge. Captain, we're sending you the readings of the probe. I'm sure you'll be pleased." "Acknowledged. I'm receiving them now. My God, look Chakotay!" "Looks like very good news to me. Should we start celebrating?" "As soon as Voyager gets back, we'll be celebrating for weeks." Back in Engineering, more positive readings came from the probe. They just needed to run a few more tests on the ship's systems before they go through the wormhole. "I'm going back on the bridge B'Elanna." "Sure Harry. Thanks for all your help." "No problem. You can always count on me for help." "Great...I might need you in my trial when we get back to DS9. I'm sure the Federation will be glad Voyager kept all the Maquis." "Maquis? After these three years, Captain Janeway is sure to fight the Federation beaurecrats for your pardons. When you are pardoned, I hope you won't be a stranger." "I won't be...what would I do without my little Starfleet brother?" She gave him a hug before he left, and hoped inside that everything would be all right once they got back. Tom sat at the helm awaiting the orders to take Voyager into the wormhole. All the tests proved it to be stable and every crew member was anxious to get home. Tom, however, had mixed feelings. What would happen to him? Would he be headed back to the penal colony, or would he be free? What would he do if he was free? He wanted a future, a future with B'Elanna. "Mr. Paris, make preparations to take us in...impulse engines only." "Aye Captain." "Everyone enjoy the ride." Minutes passed and the crew awoke. They had exited the wormhole, but now where were they? "What are our coordinates?" "We're in the Gamma Quadrant. We're only two light year away from the Prophet's wormhole to DS9!" "Maximum warp until we get to the opening and then back to impulse engines." Back on DS9, Odo was running tactical exercises while Worf was on duty. Commander Dax was monitoring the wormhole for any activity when she discovered an approaching ship. "Captain, there is a ship approaching from the wormhole." "Is it a Jem'Hadar?" "No, it's a...I don't believe it." "Can you be more specific old Man?" "It's a Federation ship...Intrepid Class." The wormhole opened and the saw the approaching ship. "By the Prophet's, it's Voyager! Hail them and then hail Starfleet." "Captain, we're here! And we're being hailed by DS9." "Thanks Mr. Kim. On screen please. This is Captain Janeway. Hello and congratulations Captain Sisko." "Captain Janeway! I'm surprised but glad to see you. You have alot of people I'm sure will want to see you. Please come aboard with your crew." "Thank you. It's great to be in the Alpha quadrant. Please inform your security that the former Maquis members are my crew and that they shall not be taken into custody." "I'll do that and I'm eager to meet with you after you've settled into quarters. I'll meet you in docking bay 2." "Attention everyone. We will be docking in DS9. I'm sure everyone will be looking forward to replicated food, contact with our allies, and whatever. Please remain in your uniforms since I'm sure Starfleet has been contacted. To the former Maquis members, I will do everything I can to help you. It has been a pleasure serving with you all. I'm sure much has changed. Janeway out." Each member of Voyager was eager to get off the ship. Captain Janeway, Commander Chakotay, and Lieutenant Tuvok were the first to get off. They were met by Captain Sisko, Major Kira and Odo. "Welcome back to DS9. I'm sure you remember my First Officer Major Kira and my Chief of Security, Odo." "Nice to see you again. This is my First Officer, Commander Chakotay and my Chief of Security Lieutenant Tuvok. Captain, I could really use the strongest cup of Rak'tagino you have. My crew are eager to board the station. Tuvok has the list of crew from my ship for Odo. W can use our quarters in Voyager." "Then welcome everyone aboard!" On the Promenade, Harry showed Kes around the various shops, the Bajoran temple, and introduced her to various Races. Tom and B'Elanna were in Quarks, the most popular spot to be in. Many of the patrons stopped to get a look at her, but Tom gave them looks to keep them away. However, a Klingon warrior approached their table. "I am Ge'Ran of the House of Rangon. I am stationed here with General Mortok. May I ask what house you belong to?" B'Elanna looked at him with recognition but wouldn't acknowledge him. "I don't have a house. My father was human and I haven't heard from my mother in years." "Excuse me Ge'Ran, I don't think my friend wants to talk to you." "I mean no harm to her human. I believe she knows who I am." B'Elanna wouldn't look at the Klingon or Tom. Ge'Ran wasn't trying to cause trouble, but Tom was still being protective. "Okay, who do you think she is." "She is B'Elanna Torres, the strongest and must stubborn girl I ever knew when I was a child. You remember me B'Elanna? You broke my arm when we were nine." "B'Elanna, do you know him?" "Yes I do and don't care to talk to you, Ge'Ran. I broke your arm because you and your Father insulted me." "My Father was foolish in some ways." "Um, B'Elanna? Why did you break his arm and not his Dad's?" "His Dad challenged me to have a hand to hand combat with his son. Rangon didn't think a half-Klingon was good enough to play with his son. After that, I didn't play with any other Klingons." "Your Mother misses you." "How do you know?" "Because she speaks of you often to my Mother. She mourned and then celebrated your death when you disappeared after you left Starfleet Academy. She never believed your spirit left this world." "Maybe I'll look her up." "She would be honored, I'm sure. Please excuse, I must go back to work." After Ge'Ran left, Tom touche B'Elanna's hand. "Are you all right my Bella?" "Oh, I'm fine. Seeing Klingons on this station has brought back bad memories for me. Ge'Ran was one of the nicer ones from my mother's hometown." "He didn't seem that bad. I don't think he'll make any trouble for you. We've got to find out what's been happening since we were in Delta Quadrant. I heard rumors about the Dominion and Cardassians union. That Gul Dukat has sworn to destroy any Maquis or Klingons found in their borders." "I'm sure we'll hear about in tonight's briefing of the senior staff with DS9's senior staff. It should be interesting." "Then why don't we take out a holosuite and relax until then." B'Elanna smiled at him and stood up. She walked over to Quark and requested a program. Quark smiled as he looked over to Tom. Tom wondered what kind of program she was getting. He was amused by the way Quark flinched when she pretended to strike him. I wonder what he said to her he thought. She got the program and took Tom's hand. They headed over to a holosuite and entered. "Where are we B'Elanna?" "In Ancient Greece. Those are heated springs we can relax in. The privileged Greeks loved these springs." "Looks cozy. Where are our swimsuits?" "We don't have any and I am expecting you to behave like a perfect gentleman." "On my honor. You go in first while I close my eyes and then I'll come in and you close your eyes." "Okay, here goes." B'Elanna went in the heated, bubbling springs. She looked over at Tom to make sure he kept his eyes closed. "Your turn Tom." She closed her eyes and opened them as soon as water splashed her face. "What did you do that for?" "You looked cute. The water feels very relaxing...much better than the wild waters we were in before. How did you the idea for this program?" "I asked that Ferengi toad for a relaxing program for the two of us. He named a few that were unacceptable and I was about to slug him when he handed me this one." "Okay, let's talk about us. Where do plan on going after we're all freed?" "I don't know. My homes consisted of makeshift hideouts and shuttles before Voyager. What about you? Will you rejoin Starfleet?" "I'd like to, but I don't want to see my Dad again." "Then what about us? Would you mind it terribly if I stay where you stay?" "Nothing else would make me happier. I heard there's a performance of Don Quixote on the station tonight. Would you like to go tonight?" "I'd love to Tom. I'd like to see Dulcinea and the dillusional Knight." B'Elanna moved a little closer to Tom and kissed him. They still had a half meter space between them. She wanted to close the gap, but she wanted to wait longer for a deeper level of their relationship. Both senior staffs met in a large meeting room on DS9. It was first official with a celebration dinner afterwards. B'Elanna observed Commander Worf and Commander looking rather cozy before the meeting started. She heard rumors that the Trill was his Par'Machi. She must have had lots of broken ribs she thought. Commander Worf, the only Klingon to graduate from the Academy, walked over to B'Elanna. "Excuse me Ms. Torres. I am Worf." "Yes I know. I heard about you when I was at the Academy for a brief time." "It is too bad that you could not finish, but I am sure you had rough time there. I know I did. My stepbrother left after a semester and I felt very alone. You have done very well for yourself being Voyager's Chief Engineer." "I was fortunate to get that position while we were in the Delta Quadrant. Captain Janeway is a fine Captain." They spoke for a little while longer before the meeting started. Tom walked into the meeting room and walked over to B'Elanna. "Am I interrupting anything here?" "No Tom. Commander Worf, this is Voyager's pilot, Lt. Tom Paris." "Yes, I know...the Admiral's son. Excuse me." "What was that all about?" "I don't know. I guess he heard about Caldik Prime and my mistakes. Why was he talking to you?" "I guess he just wanted to be friendly. He has a son who's part human also. I guess he was trying to say I could fit in if I wanted to." "He mated with a human?" "No, she was half human, but more Klingon in her ways then myself. She was killed by Duras and Worf, in turn, killed him...another Klingon rite to Avenge. He was left to care for his son, who now lives on Earth with Worf's foster parents." The briefing began with each Captain presenting his/her own reports. Each person was amazed to see the different events that happened in each quadrant. Admiral Paris walked in unexpectedly during Captain Janeway's report. She stopped and sat down. "Captain Kathryn Janeway, I'm so glad to see you." He walked over to her and hugged her. Tom looked down at the table while B'Elanna took his hand in hers under the table. "I received your reports this afternoon by subspace. I wanted to get here as soon as I can to see you for myself. And where is my son?" Tom stood up hesitantly. He felt eyes staring at him. Captain Janeway looked motherly at him. "I'm right here Dad." He didn't look at his Dad, he just kept his eyes on his Dad's pips. "Well Thomas, I've read the Captain's logs of your piloting. Well done son. I'd like to speak with you later." "Sure Dad. Oh, this is our Chief Engineer and my girlfriend B'Elanna Torres." "Nice to meet you young Lady. Torres, oh yes, I know your father. He has kept a picture of a young girl on his desk for years. It must be you." "I haven't seen or heard from him since I was five, sir." "His loss my dear. I proudly display all my children's pictures at various ages in my office. Well, Captain Sisko, I'm sorry to interrupt your briefing. Please continue." "You're welcome to join us. We are almost done. Perhaps you can fill everyone in on the Federation's role after the Cardassians joined the Dominion." It was time for the celebration. The food was provided by Quark, for a small price, of course. Kes was taking to Professor O'Brien about creating a hydroponics room on the station. The Doctor, wearing his portable emitter, looked like he was annoying Dr. Bashir. Commander Chakotay and Major Kira were discussing the Prophets in the wormhole. Janeway and Sisco were discussing the Maquis, the Cardassians and the Dominion. Odo, of course, kept his back against the wall looking suspiciously at everyone. It was amusing to see Tuvok doing the same. "I hope everyone from Voyager has contacted any families." "I'm sure they have Ben. I'm still waiting to hear from Mark and any news of what happened to all the puppies my dog had three years ago." "I have some logs from earth that concerns what Starfleet did after they believed you and ship was destroyed in the Badlands. I'll have it sent to your quarters if you wish." "That would be wonderful. I hope everyone attended our memorial. Oh my goodness, I must contact my Mother. Please excuse me." "Of course Kathryn." Jadzia walked over to Tom and B'Elanna. "Hi there. I'm Jadzia Dax. You must be Tom and B'Elanna. Tom, one of my previous hosts knew your Dad. He was always bragging about you." "Oh, thanks. We're sort of estranged right now...especially after" "After Caldik Prime? Don't worry about it. Take it from me, one of my children and I didn't speak for about ten years. Time will heal all wounds. Anyway B'Elanna, can I interest you in any Klingon calisthenics? Worf and I have a great program." "You fight against Worf? You must be good. What made you interested in a Klingon?" "My former host lived among your people. I got interested in them shortly after I received my Dax symbiant. Are you interested in joining me?" "Well, sure, but I have to tell you I'm out of practice." "Then now is a good time to pick up your bat'telh." "I don't have one. My mother and I haven't spoken in years and she had a hard time teaching me the Klingon ways." "We can replicate you one. How about tomorrow at 1400 hours?" "Fine Commander, I'll be there." "Great! Please call me Jadzia when we're not on duty." She departed from them and took her place by Worf. They looked liked a happy, but odd couple. Tom and B'Elanna resumed gazing in one another's eyes, oblivious to the crowd around them. "B'Elanna, care to take a walk with me? I'm sure we won't be missed." "I'd love to Tom. I don't think I can talk to anymore people." But before they can leave the room, Admiral Paris walked towards them. "Thomas, can I talk to you for a moment?" "Um, sure Dad. B'Elanna, please stay." "Son, after you were sent to New Zealand, words between us were horrible. I've wanted to tell you how sorry I was, but it all came out wrong." "Dad, I can remember what you said. You were worried more about the Paris name rather than your son." B'Elanna felt Tom's hold on her hand get tighter. "I've grown alot in the last three years, thanks to Captain Janeway, being on Voyager and because of B'Elanna." "I've changed too Son. Losing you in the Badlands was like losing your Mom all over again. I did much thinking about your childhood and how I sounded. Please give us time to work out our differences." Tom gave him a long look. His Dad's words were full of sincerity, yet he could still feel the scars in his heart. "Well Dad, it'll take some time for things to heal, but I'll give it a try as long as you don't push it." "That's all I ask Son. Your sisters are also eager to see you and there are a couple of new relatives for you to meet." "I'm an Uncle?" "Yes." "That's great. I'll send them a message in the morning." "I'm sure they'll love to hear from their little brother. Also, Ms. Torres, you should be hearing from your Dad soon. I hope you don't mind me contacting him. More than twenty years is too long not to see the pretty little girl in the picture." "Thank you Admiral, but I wouldn't know what to say." "Hello is a good start. He should be given a chance to explain himself to you and your Mother. I hope you contacted her too. Well, I'll leave the two of you alone now." Tom and B'Elanna stepped out of the room quickly to avoid anymore people. The walked around the space station, deck after deck, holding one another's hand. However, both of them seemed preoccupied with thoughts of estranged family members. "If I contact my Mother to meet with my Father, she'll kill him." "Well, maybe you should speak with them separately first. I'm sure each one would want to see you after all these years. Better catch up on your Klingon protocol so not to offend your Mom. Dax or Worf would probably love to help you." "Maybe. What about you Tom? How are you after seeing your Dad?" "There's alot of healing I have to do and alot of things I need to say to him. It'll take a long time before I can ever have a close relationship with him. He always seemed to have a better relationship with some of his students, including Captain Janeway." "Okay, let's change the subject. Tell me about this play we're going to see tomorrow night." "Well, if I tell you, don't get mad about the character Dulcinea or should I say, Aldonza. The character sees her as a Lady and calls her by Dulcinea. She actually is a kitchen worker who part times as a prostitute. She sees herself as nothing, but Don Quixote sees her as a Lady. His character is good natured, sincere and sees himself as the 'righter of rights'. He's sort of a romantic and heroic. You'll enjoy the play, especially since it's a musical." "Well, I'm looking forward to it. I hope we don't get any stares from other Starfleet personnel. They probably think were traitors and should be in prison." "Who cares what they think. The Maquis is getting protection from the Federation against the Cardassians. Let's wait and see what our hearings say about us." "When is the hearing?" "The Captain said she'll let us know tomorrow morning after her meeting with quite a few Admirals...including my Dad." "Then no sense worrying about that now. Let's go back to the ship." "Lead on McDuff." "Sure thing Shakespeare." The two smiled as they headed for docking bay 2. There was a Bajoran security guard standing at the entrance. "Good evening. You two will need to check in before you can enter. Captain Sisko wants to ensure security for all the members of Voyager." "Whatever you say. Let's let him scan us and get back to our quarters." "Where do you want to go B'Elanna?" "Anywhere. I don't think I can go to sleep. I'm too anxious about our hearings and it's so strange to be out of the Delta Quadrant." "Well, we can go to either of our quarters and I can read to you." "That sounds good, but not the play. I don't want to know the rest of what happens to Dulcinea or Don Quixote." "How about a Shakespearean tragedy--Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet?" "The first play. I haven't read that since I was fourteen. It didn't mean so much to me back then, but hearing you speak Old English will be very entertaining." "Then let's go." The two entered B'Elanna's quarters. They settled down on the couch and Tom began reading. Both were engulfed in the story for three hours until their bodies fell asleep. At 0714, Tom woke up with a sore back, but smiled as he saw B'Elanna's sweet head resting on his shoulder. They fell asleep on the couch right after Juliet was given the poison. "B'Elanna, wake up. B'Elanna it's almost 0730." "Hmmmm? What happened Tom? Oh, my back is killing me! This couch is so uncomfortable and when did we fall asleep?" "Well, it's not fun sleeping in a seated position. Anyway, according to the data padd, we fell asleep when Juliet got the poison from the Friar. Well, I better get to my own quarters to change. Where shall we meet for breakfast?" "A community replicator please!" "Okay, I'll be back in about twenty minutes." Tom exited her quarters while a few crew members saw him. He just looked at them with no comment. The two spent an innocent night together and if he were tell them that, they wouldn't believe it so why bother to say anything. As he approached his quarters he saw Harry departing. "Hey Harry! What can I do for you?" "Oh, I was wondering where you were last night. I stopped over here to find you but no answer?" "B'Elanna and I fell asleep to Romeo and Juliet. Nothing happened if that's what you're thinking." "I wasn't thinking anything Tom. Great for you and B'Elanna if anything is happening. Anyway, I'll be one of the people putting in a good word for you and the other former Maquis. This should be a long and interesting hearing." "Thanks pal. Do you have any plans with Starfleet yet?" "No, but I'm sure someone will need an operations officer." "They'll be a fool if they didn't hire you." "What are your plans?" "I won't know until after the hearing. Also, I'd like to know about what B'Elanna will do." "Okay, then I'll catch you two later." "Why don't you invite Kes to join B'Elanna and Me to the play this evening? It'll be a double date...dinner first, then a musical play...after that you're on your own." "Sounds good. I'll let you know later." Tom entered his quarters for a quick shower. He could still feel the sensation of B'Elanna's head sleeping on his shoulder. He hoped the hearings would free the two of them to continue their future together. B'Elanna frantically showered and fixed herself up. When Tom left, she laid down on the uncomfortable couch drinking in the scents Tom left behind. She allowed herself to daydream about him until she realized it was almost time to leave. Today they'd have breakfast, then she'd be in for a beating against Commander Dax, but the evening would, of course be with Tom. She felt very comfortable with knowing she and Tom were a new couple...possibly falling in love. The hearing lasted until 1238 hours. All the Maquis members, Tom and those putting in good words for them were put through numerous questions. Luckily, DS9's computer downloaded all their logs or else the hearings would never end. No one got a hint to whether the outcome would be positive or otherwise. Whatever the outcome, Tom was committed to be with B'Elanna. "B'Elanna, we have time for a quick bite. You want to go to the Klingon restaurant before you meet with Jadzia Dax?" "Is your human stomach up for Klingon food?" "Well, I'll try anything once...as long as it doesn't kill me." "I'll have to keep that in mind. Okay, just a light lunch then." The two sat at a quiet table in the restaurant. B'Elanna held in her amused laughter everytime Tom took a bite of his meal. Think clams, think uncooked chicken, think, oh no it's moving in my mouth! "Are you okay Tom?" "Fine. This is a ...a very interesting meal." "You don't have to finish it if you don't want to." "And risk that huge Klingon chef be offended. No way, I'll be a big boy and finish my plate." "Whatever you say. Don't complain later when you feel squirming in your stomach." "What?!" "Just kidding." The two didn't notice Worf and Jadzia a few tables away. They were into their own conversation when they heard B'Elanna laugh. Jadzia insisted the two of them join the young lieutenants. "Hi Tom , B'Elanna. May we join you?" "Sure Commander, I mean Jadzia. Tom and I were just finishing up our lunches." "Good choice Tom. This is one of my favorites." "Well, I never had a meal quite like this before. Excuse me, can get anyone a drink? Bloodwine Commander Worf?" "No thank you. I prefer to drink prune juice. I will join you to get the ladies a beverage." "Fine sir." The two men left and sat at the bar for their drink orders. This gave the ladies an opportunity to have a little time alone. "So, B'Elanna. How long have you and Tom been together?" "Um, we just started dating a couple of weeks ago. We didn't start out as friends though. Can I ask you something personal?" "My favorite kind of question." "Are you and Commander Worf...?" "Yes, and I have the medical files to prove it." "But according to Klingon customs..." "We don't follow all Klingon traditions. Does that mean you and Tom never...?" "No, never. We just started dating. We did get a little close when a Vulcan infected me with the Pon Farr...nothing happened though because he was a complete gentleman. He didn't want our friendship ruined." "Great guy, but how was the imbalance purged." "I took the Vulcan's challenge myself." "Hey, I like you. It'll be a great workout this afternoon. Do you think Tom would workout with Worf." "Only if he had a death wish. Here they come." "Here you go my dear B'Elanna. I want you to try the Andorian version of a bay breeze." "Yuck...what's in it?" "I told you her Klingon tongue would dislike it. B'Elanna, you do not want to know what's in it." "Well, Tom and Worf. B'Elanna and I have to be leaving. We have the holosuite reserved for 1400 hours and you know how annoying Quark gets when we're late." Tom helped B'Elanna out of her chair. Worf grimaced as he watched the two of them embrace before they parted. Jadzia squeezed the back of his neck when she saw his facial expression. The men were left as the women exited. "Excuse me Tom, may I ask you a question." "Go ahead sir. If it's about Caldkik Prime, you can read the report." "I did read the report. I read you falsified your first report, then changed it later. It took courage for you to finally admit the truth. Why did you join the Maquis?" "Let's just say my Father was disappointed on how he could raise a son like me when he was absent my whole life. I know with Klingon, you honor your Fathers and family name. With my Dad, it was worse." "You do not have to explain it to me. I bear no hatred or malice toward you. How did you and B'Elanna become..." "We're just dating for now, despite rumors. I care for her a great deal and want to take things slowly." "A very wise decision for a young couple to make." "If you don't mind Commander, could you fill me in about Klingon customs when it comes to, well, courtship I guess. B'Elanna says she really isn't up on your customs, but it is part of her heritage and I don't want her to forget about it." "You are off to a good start by taking it slow and she does know your intent to pursue this relationship. Let us see what House her Mother is from. Traditions vary from different families. Any information will help you, especially if you intend on meeting her Mother." "I'll take any help you can give me." Back in the holsuite, Jadzia and B'Elanna were fighting away. B'Elanna couldn't believe the strength of this woman. Each strike she blocked was getting stronger and stronger. They moved from one side of the battlefield to the next. The finally, as B'Elanna struck with her bat'telh, Jadzia turned her own up and around breaking the former's weapon in two. "You win, again." "Hey, don't take it so hard. I learned that last trick from Worf. Besides, you just need some more practice and I'm always up for a new challenger." "Easy for you to say. I'll give you an answer in a few days when my muscles have healed. I'm meeting Tom tonight to see the play." "Oh, Man a La Mancha. That was a very funny, yet sincere play. I'm sure you'll have a good time. Now, let's talk girl talk. What are you wearing tonight?" "I'm not sure. I've only dressed up a few times because I never really felt glamorous." "Oh, you are my dear. Let's go over to Garak's dress shop. He has the latest styles in this quadrant." "Garak, the Cardassian?" "Don't worry about him. He may be a little ruthless, but he is exiled from Cardassia. Let's go and find you something elegant." Jadzia smiled at her as they walked out of the holosuite. What a sweet kid she thought. "Good afternoon Ladies. What can I do for you...something for a special occasion?" "Hello Garak. This is B'Elanna Torres and she would like something elegant for this evening." "You were one of the Maquis lost for over three years, am I correct? Have no fear young lady, I have a wonderful selection for you to choose from." Garak walked over to the rack and pulled out three dresses. "Now, take these three over to the fitting room and try them on. Each shade will compliment your beautiful skin. The young man escorting you this evening will be breathless when he sees you." "Thank you Mr. Garak." B'Elanna hesitatingly takes the dresses and tries each one on. With each one, Jadzia praised her for how her petite frame carried each one well. B'Elanna was a bit uncomfortable, but preferred an ivory colored dress. It had glistened pearls going around the waist of the dress, which accentuated her rounded derriere. The spaghetti straps also had the pearls attached to them. "Mr. Garak, I would like this dress, but would you have any shoes to match?" "Of course my dear. You look so breath taking Ms. Torres!" "Thank you, how much do I owe you?" "Put it on my account Garak." B'Elanna tried to protest but Jadzia covered her mouth. "No, I insist. It's the mother instinct in me...one of my former hosts always cherished these kinds of moments with her child." "I don't know how to thank you." "Just have a good time tonight...and knock your man off his feet...literally." B'Elanna blushed slightly but smiled sweetly. She was falling in love with Tom Paris, but was she ready to move further. Only time and the hearings will be able to decide their fate. "Can you tell me about Klingon customs in regards to dating?" "Of course B'Elanna. But, wouldn't you want to discuss that with your Mom?" "I haven't spoken to her in years. She had a difficult time teaching me all the rules." "Sure, let's go to my quarters and we can talk all about tradition." At 1930, B'Elanna paced in her quarters waiting for Tom to pick her up. He left a message saying Harry and Kes were going to join them. That would be fine, except she was looking forward to being alone with him, especially since she got the dress. Then a chime was heard. Oh great it's him! "Come in Tom." "Good evening B'Elanna...you look incredible. That dress and your hair...when did this happen?" B'Elanna blushed slightly. She stood there in the dim lights of her room, with two candles lit on her table. The illumination from the canals made the pearls on her dress sparkle. Her hair was tied up, with s small strand on each side curling down. She looked absolutely beautiful. "Commander Dax was nice enough to take me to Garak's Dress Shop, and my hair, well. I don't know, I feel foolish. She fixed it as well. She said it was one of her host's motherly instincts." "Well, you look incredible. I'll be the envy of everyone on this space station with you in my arms. Shall we go to dinner now?" Tom held out his arm as they walked out. The two walked through the Promenade not noticing the eyes on B'Elanna. Well, Tom did notice many eyes on B'Elanna. Some looked with great interest, and others, like some Klingons, grunted as they saw her. He wasn't sure if the grunt was an approval or disapproval. He did notice Worf nodding at the two of them as they passed him. No teeth showing, so he must approve. "Well, here we are B'Elanna. Let me get the chair for you." "Thank you Tom. When will Harry and Kes join us?" "They should be here soon. Right now let's savor the moment we have alone." He took her hands in his and gazed into her eyes. He stared at her bare neck and lovely collar bone which looked so inviting. He also saw that she still wore the ankle bracelet attached to a necklace he gave her. "Let's get a drink Tom. Something a little sweet please." Her brown eyes gazed into his without blinking. This moment can last forever and I couldn't be any happier. Tom got up, first kissing her palms and walked over to the bar. The look on Quark's face turned sour as he ordered a drink. Quark walked to the replicator and handed Tom two pink colored drinks. "Here we go something sweet for the lovely woman." "What is this? It looks delicious." She took a sip and made a slight smirk. Tom took a sip as well. "Wow, he put real rum in this. This drink is an old earth drink called a Strawberry Daiquiri. It reminds of the luau on the holodeck. You remember that day don't you?" "How can I forget. I ended up having dinner with Vorick by myself. Anyway, this is delicious." "Yes, but you looked great in the dress you wore. As they drank and laughed a little more, Harry and Kes walked over to their table. Something made them look a little different. Kes' eyes were sparkling as Harry looked as if his whole body was smiling. Earlier he received a subspace message from Libby. She had mourned for him for two years and then went on with her life. He wasn't upset about the message. In fact, he was relieved that she was doing well. "Good evening you two. Sorry we're late. Kes was in a heavy discussion with some Betazoid scientist on her way to Bajor." "Yes, I'm sorry. The Alpha quadrant is a very interesting place and it's wonderful that I can experience all this. Harry has been so kind introducing me to the many species belonging to the Federation. I do feel bad for the Doctor though. He saw Dr. Bashir and their conversation didn't go so well." "Please have a seat you two and I'll get you a drink. How about whatever we're drinking...you'll love it Kes." "That would be fine." "So you two, are you enjoying DS9?" Harry asked as he helped Kes into her chair. "Tom and I are having fun and we're also glad we're not in custody, yet." "Oh B'Elanna. You two will not be taking into custody by Starfleet. Didn't you get the report about the Federation helping all the Maquis colonies out of Cardassian space? Besides, most of the crew from Voyager spoke highly of you." "We appreciate that Harry. Do you know when they'll make their decision?" "I heard by 1000 hours tomorrow." "Well, I guess we can celebrate tonight as our last night of freedom, or the beginning of our freedom." Tom said as he put his arm around B'Elanna. "I think I'll just enjoy myself without worrying Tom. Are we ready to order?" "While we were at the bar, I ordered us some mozzarella sticks and Buffalo wings as an appetizer. You'll love it." "Buffalo's have wings?" "Long story...here they come." The two couples walked through the Promenade to the site of the play. Many arrived to attend, which pleased the young Jake Sisko, who is currently a writer. It was because of his interest in reading and writing that the station allowed him to bring these type of performers aboard the station. Tom found a front row seat for the four of them to sit. He hoped inside that B'Elanna wouldn't be offended by anything in the play. The play began and was marvelous...until a very horrible seen which Tom forgot about. He looked at B'Elanna, who's eyes didn't move from the stage, as the character Aldonzo was attacked. He squeezed her hand during the rest of the scene. Kes kept her hand over her mouth until the next scene began. The end of the play came at last. Some attendees, mostly female, had watery eyes. Don Quixote will live on. "What did you think of the play B'Elanna? I'm sorry I forgot to mention that one scene, because I honestly forgot." "That's okay Tom. She should have killed some of those men, or at least injured them." "Well, it was written centuries ago when men and women weren't thought of being on the same level. Let's talk about something else." "Thanks for taking me Tom. How about you and Kes? What did you think?" "The singing was pretty good and the main character was so unaware of his reality, but he was genuinely sincere and sweet." "I agree with Kes. Well, if you two will excuse us, we're going to call it a night." Harry held out his arm for Kes and the two went off. "Well Mr. Paris...now what?" "I don't want this night to end B'Elanna." "Neither do I." She moved closer to placing her hands on his shoulders and then around his back. He, in turn, wrapped his arms around her waist hugging her close to him. His chin was resting against her forehead; they looked as if they were slow dancing. She lifted her head up towards him and smiled. He slowly moved a little closer to brush his lips on hers. They were engulfed in a tender kiss that they didn't hear footsteps headed towards them. "Excuse me." It was a security officer from the station who interrupted them. "I'm sorry to disturb you, but there is a priority message in the security office in Odo's office for Ms. Torres." "For me? Who is it from?" "I'm not sure who sent the message, but it originated on the Klingon homeworld." Those last two words sent shivers down B'Elanna's back. She looked at Tom and then the security officer. Tom nodded and off they went to Odo's office. Odo was there to greet them. "I'm sorry if we interrupted your evening Ms. Torres, but the message was a priority one. You may use my office to hear the message while we step outside." "Thank you. Tom, please stay." "Anything for you B'Elanna. Ready when you are." B'Elanna turned on the screen to receive the message, except it wasn't a message. It was a live call from...her Mother! "SoS!" (Mother) "Puqbe'! qalegh 'ej jIQuch (Daughter! I see you and I am glad) "bomDI' 'IwwIj quqaw." (The memory of you sings in my Blood.) "Mother, please speak Standard. I have a friend here." "I knew the gods were correct when I didn't feel your spirit leave this world. I was informed by someone on DS9 of what happened to you. Why did you run away from me? I must have been a good teacher of honor and our ways." "Mother, please don't. It was hard growing up the way I am. It wasn't your fault." "It was partially do to your runaway Dad," Tom murmured to himself. "Who said that B'Elanna?" "This is my close friend, Tom Paris. He and I served on Voyager together." "A human? Make sure he does not break your heart. Next time I see your Father, it will be worse. BortaS blr jablu'Dl'reH QaQqu'nay'." (Revenge is a dish best served cold) "Mother, I thought you were over your plans on killing him." Tom's eyes widened as he heard B'Elanna speak so calmly about her mother's deathwish on her father. "I haven't spoken to him yet since I don't even know if he still exists. You may have to see him again...in my future with Tom." Her mother gazed suspiciously at Tom. He could have sworn she growled at him with disgust. "It's finally nice to meet the woman who brought such a beautiful woman into this world." Tom said as he put his arm around B'Elanna. "Tom Paris is your name?" "Yes Ma'am." "Do not dishonor my daughter, or you will feel the fury of a woman angered for the past 25 years." "Mother! Tom has been nothing else but honorable. Please come to DS9 and meet with us so we can talk. I need to apologize and explain alot to you." "I will see when your uncle can take me on his ship." "Then we'll be hear. qalegh vIneH!" Her mother's image left the screen and was replaced by the Klingon symbol. Tom turned to her and placed his hands on her shoulders. "How are you B'Elanna?" "I guess I'm okay. I do feel like I'm ten years old again." "Well, please grow up for my sake. I don't want to be caught in a room with a ten year old." "Very funny Tom. Let's go." As soon as they left the security office, B'Elanna walked over to Odo and thanked him. He acknowledged her with a short nod and the couple headed towards Voyager. They stopped in front of her quarters for a moment. "Well, I guess this is good night. We'll hear our fates, according to the Federation tomorrow. Do you want to meet for breakfast?" "Of course I do Tom. I need to hold your hand until that announcement." "Well, I'd like to hold you now if you don't mind." "Please do." The two embraced warmly. Tom placed one of his hands on B'Elanna's tied back hair and removed the clip holding it up. Her hair fell back into place, allowing him to stroke it gently. She moved her head onto his chest, hearing the fast beats of his heart. Her heart began beating faster as his hands caressed her shoulder, and then down her back, stopping at the waist. She looked into his deep blue eyes and kissed him. Her breath was taken away for a moment. She felt as if they were dancing on their own star in the moonlight. She gently traced his lips with her index finger and whispered into his ear. "We better say good night Tom. As much as I want you to stay with me, we need to know our future." "I don't want to leave you now, but I know I should. Until the morning then my Love." "What? What did you say?" "Um, I...what did I say?" "You called me your Love!" "Yes I did. I didn't want to say it yet...it slipped out." Tom was afraid her reaction would be negative. Instead she smile and squeezed him tight. He returned the gesture. "Until the morning Tom." She kissed him again and entered her quarters. The entire crew of Voyager were assembled in a large meeting room to await their fates. Most of the officers and crewmen originally stationed on Voyager just waited to hear when and where their next assignments would be. Tom, B'Elanna, and the Maquis sat anxiously as they waited for the 3-D images of the Admirals to show up. Captain Janeway was standing against a wall with her hands on her hips, trying not to look nervous for her crew. Then the meeting began. The crowd a Quark's could be heard all through the promenade. There were many people celebrating. The former Maquis crew were pardoned. Commander Chakotay was given his former Starfleet rank of Lt. Commander and was asked to join the help in rescuing the Maquis who were in any Cardassian space. Some of his crew would be joining him as well. Harry would finally be promoted to a Lieutenant and was asked to remain as Voyager's Chief Operations officer. Tuvok was also promoted to Lt. Commander and will remain on Voyager resuming his post. Captain Janeway was commended on her performance as a Captain in the Delta Quadrant, in uniting two crews and gathering up so much information of the civilizations encountered. Neelix was asked to travel to various Starbases for the next two years to 'educate' the Alpha Quadrant of his home quadrant. Kes asked to remain on Voyager, but she was asked to go to Earth and be an honorary Ambassador. She declined graciously because she too wanted to continue to explore and learn about more cultures. The Doctor was fortunate to meet his creator Dr. Zimmerman. With the neural gel packs placed into the ship, it allowed the Doctor to almost qualify as a sentient being. Dr. Zimmerman asked Starfleet to allow the EMH to remain running so they can do more tests. Admiral Paris announced that Tom would not be going back to New Zealand. The Academy stated he may make up any classes he missed to allow him to keep the rank given to him by Janeway. Upon completion, he would be sought after by many starships. B'Elanna's engineering record was impeccable and ingenious. Many space stations requested hiring her as their Chief Engineer. She gave no one a definite answer. She would after her meeting with Tom and her Mother. Tom stood in front of the round window above the promenade. He stared at it with no expression on his face. A warm hand touched his shoulder by surprise. "Hi B'Elanna. I was just thinking about my...our future." "I've been doing that myself. I think it's great news for everyone on Voyager. I will miss some people though, especially Starfleet." "Me too. Voyager was given three months leave before their off again on some adventure. What are your plans B'Elanna? I was thinking of what my Dad did for me at the meeting. I've been thinking that I'd like to be back in Starfleet, but I don't want to lose you." "Tom, I don't want to lose you either so I contacted Starfleet myself." "What? About what?" "It seems the Academy, which threw me out, would love to have the Chief Engineer of Voyager create simulated engineering problems for their students." "You're moving to Earth as a teacher?!" "Yes, will you go there now?" she asked with a smile in her eyes. Without a word he picked her up and swung her around. She embraced him warmly and screamed loud enough to get the bypassers' attention. "You just made me a happy man B'Elanna Torres. I was also hoping if you could make me a happier one." "How could I do that flyboy?" "Wait right here and I'll be back in ten minutes. Better yet, can you come to my quarters?" "Well, okay let's go." The two headed running towards docking bay 2 hand in hand. Jadzia smiled at them as they passed by. "Don't they make a cute couple Worf?" "Cute? I'm not sure about that Jadzia. They do appear very happy together. As for her Mother's opinion, well, we should be hearing of that this evening in battle or in ceremony." "I love Klingons, but sometimes I can't understand you." Tom and B'Elanna entered his quarters. He went over the replicator and asked the computer for a bottle of champagne, a dozen white roses and a white satin pillow. He sat B'Elanna on the couch, gave her the roses and placed the pillow on the floor. "Tom, what are you doing?" "Shhhhh. Don't say anything until I ask you to....please." She nodded as he headed for his sleeping quarters. He came back holding a small box decorated with a red bow on top. He dopped down on one knee, resting it on the pillow and held the box to B'Elanna. "B'Elanna, we have known each other for over three years. We've grown to be very close friends and now I'm asking for it to grow. Will you please do me the honor of becoming my wife, making me the happiest man in all the quadrants?" B'Elanna smiled as she opened the box. The solitaire diamond rings was breath taking. Inside the band was an inscription which read My B'Elanna, My Love. She held her hand out so Tom can place the ring on her finger. After he did, she pushed him down on the floor and sat besides him. "Of course I'll marry you Tom! When did you get this ring?" "Well, a few months ago before our first official date." "You got this ring that long ago? How did you know I'd marry you." "Being stuck in the Delta Quadrant for seventy years may have made you say yes." Tom said jokingly. "But seriously, since our friendship grew, I knew in my heart that we are meant together always..like we're soul mates or even kindred spirits." "You are an incorrigible and arrogant man and I love you Tom. I'll be happy to be your wife. But I have to warn you, you better get some workouts programmed in before the wedding, or after the honeymoon, you'll be in Sickbay for a long time!" He smiled and hugged her close to him. They kissed for a while until a chirp interrupted them. "DS9 to Ms. Torres." "Torres here." "Please go to docking bay 5. A Klingon ship carrying your Mother is arriving." "Thank you. Torres out. Well Tom, should my Mother be the first to know?" "Can we ask Commander Worf if I can borrow his bat'telh?" "You'll be fine Tom, unless one of my cousins challenge you." Tom's eyes popped open. "Relax, I'm kidding, maybe." Worf and Jadzia were at the docking bay as well. Worf wanted to greet the Klingons first on behalf of DS9. "Welcome to Deep Space Nine. I am Commander Worf and this is Commander Dax" A large male Klingon stepped out first. "You are the Son of Mogh and you, Miss. You used to be Curzon Dax?" "You are correct." "We are honored to be here. I am D'Elron, son of Darthan and this is my sister, B'Enarda. Where is her daughter?" "I'm right here Uncle." She bowed to him out of respect. Her Mother walked over to her and placed her hands on B'Elanna's shoulders. "My dear daughter. It has been too long. Your hair is still short and you dress like a terran." "But her spirit is mostly Klingon. The whole crew can testify to that." Tom smiled nervously as he finished those words. D'Elron just growled at him. "Who is this man B'Elanna?" "Mother, Uncle, this is Tom Paris, my future husband." Many growls were heard among the Klingon ship. Worf and Jadzia stepped back to keep out of a possible family feud. Jadzia saw a young warrior take out his dagger. She quickly bent his arm around and disarmed him. Before anything else could happen, B'Elanna began to swear in Klingon. Everyone stopped in place and were silent. "Tom Paris is nothing like my father. Tom is a very brave and Honorable man. He has asked me to marry him and I have accepted. If you do not approve, then please leave now. Her Mother looked at her with shock and then with sorrow. "No my Daughter. I will not lose you again. We will ALL accept this man as your husband. Tonight we will have the ceremony so all will know you to will be joined. Worf, Son of Mogh, please prepare him for tonight." "I will be honored to." If Worf wasn't honored, Tom couldn't tell. He was more worried about what the ceremony entailed. Jadzia smiled and let go of the young warrior. "I'll show you to your quarters B'Endara. Will any of the crew be coming?" "Just me and my brother Commander. I hope there is a Klingon chef on this station. I don't like replicated food." "We have a wonderful Klingon restaurant here. I'm sure you and your Daughter can start some catching up over a good meal." "A good idea. B'Elanna, please join me there in ten minutes." "Yes Mother." As B'Elanna and her Mother walked away, Tom slumped back against the wall. Worf just smiled at him and patted his shoulder. "Come Tom, you must prepare for tonight." "This ceremony doesn't have to do with me using any weapons, does it?" Worf just laughed as he led the young pilot away. He admired the young man for not backing out of his engagement to B'Elanna. It proved he really loved her, Klingon or not. Would he, however, be brave enough for the rest of her family. Word spread quickly among the Voyager crew of B'Elanna's mother being on DS9. Many tried to walk around the station just to get a glimpse of her, but to no avail. There were also rumors of an engagement ceremony, but nothing specific. B'Elanna and B'Endara sat at the crowded Klingon restaurant. Most of the patrons were Klingon though it surprised B'Endara to see many humans there as well. The two women spoke of what happened to B'Elanna the three years spent in the Delta Quadrant. "Why the Maquis and not be a warrior for the Empire?" "Because I was never good at being a Klingon Warrior. Many Klingons disliked my mixed heritage and the Maquis were the first group to accept me as a person and not just as a half-breed." B'Endara sat there silent for a moment remembering a sad child in the human colony and an even more lonely child in the Homeworld. All she did for her daughter was force her own culture on her daughter and ignored the turmoil inside the child. B'Endara was preoccupied with her own hurt of being left by her spouse. "I apologize for any hurt that I added to you my Daughter. You didn't have to run away after you left Starfleet Academy." "It's a good thing I did Mother. I've grown alot since then and I have accepted my Klingon side. I do know that it will be a part of the life of any child Tom and I have...not an overload though." "This young man, you trust him to love you honestly?" "At first I didn't. I had heard about his past and he was an outcast at first on Voyager. I've seen all sides of him. I first just trusted him with the lives of the crew, including my own, and now I trust him completely with our life together. He never wanted me to hide my Klingon side-good or bad." "Well, my Daughter, then I will look forward to getting to know him." "Thanks, just make sure Uncle D'Elron doesn't get too close to Tom." she said jokingly. Captain Janeway sat at her terminal waiting for a very important call. She woke up early, dressed in civilian clothes and let her hair lay upon her shoulders. Her hands began to sweat as the computer announced the time. Ten minutes passed an no calls. Her head drooped on her hands in disappointment. The silence was broken by a chime at her door. Reluctantly, she answered. "Come." she said without turning her head away from the terminal. "Hi. I was wondering if you knew if anyone was interested in playing a game of tennis?" Kathryn quickly turned around and stood up. Her heart began beating so fast and a tear escaped from her right eye. "Mark! I received a message to wait for your call at 1310 hours. What are you doing here? No don't answer that question. I am so glad you're here." She ran over to him and embraced him. He handed her the flowers hiding behind his back. He kept his arms wrapped around her body so he can know she was real. "For three years I knew you were all right. You and your ship were out there somewhere...I felt it." "I was so hoping you knew I was still out there trying everything in my power to get home to you and my family. I even wore that nightgown you gave me each night. Your picture was the first face I saw every morning. So, what happened to all those puppies?" "Well," he let go of her for a moment and took something out of his bag, "here are all your puppies at their birth, 1 day old, 3 days old and so on. I actually kept a boy and a girl for you. I didn't want little Molly sad to see all her babies go." Kathryn smiled as she looked at each image. "You kept three dogs in your place all this time? What about your carpets, the furniture?" "Well, I had to...Molly became so attached to the guest room that I couldn't move her. We did sleep at your place on the weekend because we...I needed to be close to you no matter where you were." "I love you Mark, and thanks for waiting for me. I've been waiting for you all this time too. Please stay with me." "Nothing could make me go out that door." He took her in his arms again. She engaged the privacy lock and informed the computer that no messages are to interrupt them. Harry and Kes sat at Quark's drinking some strange new concoction. They each had a mysterious look on their faces. It seemed as though they were trying to communicate telepathically. Kes broke their silence. "Harry...it's been nice with you these last few weeks on Voyager and here on DS9." "I've enjoyed myself as well Kes. I'm so glad you're staying on Voyager after our leave. It'll be lonely without you now that Tom and B'Elanna won't be there." "I couldn't think of anywhere else to go where I could explore the quadrant with people I have trusted my life with. I will miss some of the crew not returning, especially the Doctor. I hope Dr. Zimmerman will be able to put him back on Voyager soon." "I hear Dr. Zimmerman is a genius...kind of arrogant, but a genius. I'm sure he'd want his protégé to live on." There again was silence between them. Each sipped the strange drink before their eyes met once more. Harry could feel the back of his neck getting warmer. Kes could see the flush in his face and knew hers should look the same. "Harry? Is there an 'us'." "I was going to ask you the same thing. You know about Libby, and how I had mixed emotions about her this last year. I'd like there to be an 'us' but we have to take it slow. Well, not too slow, I know you have about 5 years left in your Ocampan life." "Harry, I want 'us' also. You've been a special friend to me, especially after the incident of my backwards time travel." "Then here's to our new future....may this special friendship continue growing..." "...into more than a friendship." Kes said finishing Harry's toast. Her hand reached over to squeeze his left land. Harry, in turn, returned the gesture. In the Ops station, Jadzia was a little distracted so she didn't hear Sisko's voice. "Old man, are you okay?" "Oh, I'm sorry Benjamin. I guess I was just preoccupied about the engagement ceremony." "Engagement ceremony? Who's getting married?" "The two lieutenants from Voyager, Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres. Her Mother and Uncle came on the station this afternoon." "This should be one interesting ceremony...isn't B'Elanna's father in Starfleet?" "Yes, but he left his family when she was five. I wouldn't suggest a family reunion Benjamin, if that's what you're thinking. There are too many warriors ready to defend B'Endara if he shows up." "I guess you're right. But no contact to his daughter all these years..I don't understand how any father could be that way. Well, we don't know the whole story." Worf and Tom were in a holosuite reciting Klingon phrases. Worf was also educating Tom on what the proper behavior is towards the in-law family. Tom felt a little uncomfortable in the outfit he was wearing, but he looked good. Tight leather pants with silver metal covering parts of his leg and chest. He could have gone without the robe, which made him think of he was wearing a dress. Starfleet's dress uniform was bad enough. "Would you like to know of the Age of Ascension?" "Isn't that the rite of passage young Klingons go through?" "Yes Tom. Will your children go through that rite...I'm sure B'Endara, or her brother will ask you this question." "B'Elanna and I haven't discussed the specifics of which customs we will incorporate into our lives and the lives of our children." "Very well. Now Tom, have you gotten B'Elanna, how should I say, an engagement necklace?" "Oh no not yet! I remember reading about that in the records. Where shall I get one?" "It is best to buy an authentic made necklace, instead of a replicated one. Come, I know someone who has these types of items." B'Elanna and her Mother were in the latter's quarters getting ready for the ceremony. B'Elanna felt a little awkward in Klingon clothing, but it made her Mother seem happy. "Now my Daughter, have you and Tom engaged in..." "No Mother! Absolutely not." "Then he does Honor you. Living on a starship for three years, thousands of light years away and you have stayed true to your temple. I'm glad for that my dear. Do you think he's up to being mated with a Klingon?" "Mother, I'm only half-Klingon, but yes, he has great strength. The two of us did have a few combats on the holodecks." After a moment, B'Elanna smiled and joking asked, "Was my Father strong enough for you." "You are here aren't you. He survived...but he didn't stay." B'Endara 's eyes grew dark and then saddened. "reh DuSIgh vavII." (Your father is a part of you always.) "I'm sorry Mother. I didn't mean to open any hurt you have felt." Her first impulse was to hug her Mother, but Klingons never hugged. Instead she reached for her Mother's shoulder and changed the subject. "Now, what are my responsibilities as an engaged woman?" Kathryn and Mark were still in her quarters when they heard the news about her two lieutenants. Her first reaction was shock, but after recollecting all the times the two spent together without bickering, the result was inevitable. She was happy for the two of them, but right now she was happy for herself and Mark. She wasn't ready to leave her quarters yet. They still had a few hours before attending the ceremony. Chakotay sat in alone in Quark's. He had heard about Mark's arrival to the station and was feeling a little sad. For three years, he and Kathryn worked side by side without her knowing the feelings he had for her. With each day, the respect he had for her grew, as well as the attraction to her. She had always been faithful to the memory of Mark, which Chakotay admired. If they only stayed in the Delta quadrant a little longer, then maybe he would have had the chance to tell her how he felt. Maybe she did know, but didn't want him as anything more than a Commander on Voyager. Lost in his thoughts, he didn't hear a person approach him. "Chakotay you're looking well for a man lost for three years." He looked up and to his surprise, it was a woman whom he thought had been captured by the Cardassians four years ago. "Laren, Ro Laren? Is that you?" "Yes it's me. After some of Maquis heard your team got lost in the Badlands, we regrouped and try to search the area. There were Cardassian ships everywhere, so our search quickly ended." "Have you heard about the team afterwards, I mean, have you read any reports of what happened to us?" "Yes and that's why I'm here. The Federation has asked us Maquis members to come out of hiding and join in the mission to cover any Maquis colonies in the Cardassian borders." "I'll be heading one of the starships." "Yes I know...I'm one of the volunteers on your crew. Oh, I'm also sorry about Seska. She fooled us all." "I'm sorry Ro...please join me for a drink and you could tell me about how you dodged the Federation all these years." Chakotay's melancholy mood was gone as Ro smiled when she sat beside him. A crowd of people assembled in a large reception room. It was mostly a mixture of Klingons and Humans. The room was dimly lit. The non Klingons looked around waiting for the celebrating couple to come into the room. A loud bong was heard and a man started to sing in Klingon. Tom and B'Elanna walked in from separate ends of the room. They headed for the center of the room where a high platform was added. They met at the top and joined hands. Each one recited a few lines and then the exchange came. Tom placed the necklace around B'Elanna. "Here is my gift to you and it symbolizes our future bond together. Let all know that you are to be my mate, so please wear this until we are married." B'Elanna was next. "Here is a bat'telh of the House of Darthan. It symbolizes your acceptance into my family. And in battle, bImejDI' reH betleHIIj yItlhap." (Never leave without your bat'telh.) After her words were spoken, the ceremony was complete. Delron announced it was time to celebrate with a meal. Most foods on the menu were Klingon dishes, but B'Elanna specifically requested some terran food for Tom and the other guests. The party lasted for hours until all the guests grew weary and the Klingons fell asleep. Tom and B'Elanna were long gone before then. Now they were left to plan their wedding...on Earth. B'Elanna wasn't sure if her Mother or family would join them on Earth for a human ceremony. She had mixed feeling because of her Father. Would she have the courage to contact him and would he even talk to her. Well, she had time to think about that for a while. The End.
