Niki's Secret

Niki's foster mother handed Gary a cup of coffee and sat down on the couch beside her husband.  Niki had told them both on the way back from the old apartment buidling that she had something important to tell them.  Now, as she looked at both of them, Nicki felt like a little nervous, but took a sip of
her water to calm herself so that she could tell them.

"Mom.  Dad.  What I'm about to tell you is going to sound pretty werid, and you may think I'm making it up, but you have the right to know what's been
going on with me.  I don't know how I got this, but I can see into the future just by touching something or someone.  I know it sounds crazy, but it's true.
I didn't ask for this "gift", but I got it.  The way I've been acting hasn't been anything to do with you, it's me.  I couldn't forgive myself for my parent's death two years ago.  I had tired to get my dad to listen to me, and not go through the tunnel because I knew we were going to crash."  She paused for a minute before she continued.  "He was too drunk to listen.  He even told me to shut up.  I felt like the crash was my fault.  I felt that I hadn't done all I could to stop my father that night.  Gary finally made me understand that it wasn't my fault what happened."  She stopped before she found herself crying again.

Gary hugged her.  "You're finally begining to see it as a gift.  I couldn't stop your father that night either," he said.

John didn't know what to say.  He turned to Gary.  "Did she tell you this in the church?," he finally asked.

Gary nodded.  "She even thought she was a bad girl and that she had been punished somehow for what happened."

Her mother felt tears coming in her eyes.  "Oh Nicki honey.  You are not a bad girl, and you weren't being punished for what happened.  It was never your
fault that night.  You tried to stop him, and he didn't listen.  Having the gift of hindsight is never a curse when it can save a person's life like you tried to do," she told Nicki.

"You don't think I'm some kind of freak for having it, then?"

"Of course not!  You are going to be our daughter for real, and that gift is what makes you special to us."

Nicki finally felt like a big weight was off her shoulder.  All of her gulit was finally gone, and her dream of having a family again was going to come
true after all.  She smiled her thanks to Gary, who smiled back at her.  They each now shared a special gift.

John looked at his foster daughter.  "Was that how you knew I was in danger at your old place?"

Nicki nodded.  "I had just touched Gary's sleeve to tell me what he had read in the paper, and that's when I knew."

"Guess I better give the social service lady a call then, and tell her to go ahead with the adoption papers."

"Congrualtions Nicki!," Gary told Nicki giving her a big smile.

"Thank you for helping me Gary.  If it wasn't for you and the cat, I'd still be feeling gulity about what happened."

Things were looking up for Nicki now that she had put her painful past behind her forgood.

The End.
